6 Killed And 9 Injured As 5.3 Magnitude Of Earthquake Jolts Afghanistan And Pakistan

According to reports, on Monday, an earthquake that occurred overnight in eastern Afghanistan caused at least six deaths and nine injuries. A powerful earthquake with at a  magnitude of 5.3 struck regions close to the eastern border with Pakistan less than three months ago. More than 1,000 people died in that earthquake, that also happened along the same borders.

Kabul as well as the districts of Kunar, Laghman, and Nangarhar were affected by the most recent earthquake. According to Sharafuddin Muslim, the Deputy Minister for disaster management, “We are gathering data regarding casualties and damages from various places”.

Afghanistan is frequently affected by earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range, which really near to where the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates collide.

In 2015, a 7.5-magnitude earthquake that shook Pakistan and Afghanistan killed over 380 people. Afghanistan has recently been devastated by flash floods that have killed 200 or more people and destroyed thousands of houses.

Such disasters provide a serious logistical challenge for the Taliban government in Afghanistan, which is now cut off from the majority of the world due to the implementation of harsh Islamist legislation.
