After losing many European clients, Russia’s Gazprom reported Wednesday that its gas supplies to nations outside the former Soviet Union fell by more than a quarter year on year between January and May.
Exports to countries outside the region totaled 61 billion cubic metres, down 27.6% from the previous year’s same period. Gazprom also stated that gas deliveries to China via the “Power of Siberia” pipeline are increasing, although no figures were provided.
Since Russian President Vladimir Putin dispatched troops to Ukraine on February 24, Moscow has insisted that buyers from “unfriendly countries,” including EU member states, pay in rubles for their gas.
So far, natural gas deliveries to Poland, Bulgaria, Finland, and the Netherlands have been halted due to their refusal to pay in rubles.
