The United Nations authorised Turkey’s request to alter its name from Turkey to Turkiye on Wednesday, according to Stephane Dujarric, a spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
According to the spokesman, the change took effect immediately after the UN chief received a letter from Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu requesting that the country’s name be changed.
According to reports, Cavusoglu stated that the change in spelling was made as part of a plan to boost the country’s worldwide standing.
