On Sunday, French President Emmanuel Macron lost control of the National Assembly in parliamentary elections, a dramatic loss that could plunge the country into political gridlock unless he can find allies with other parties.
Macron’s centrist Ensemble alliance, which aims to raise the retirement age and expand EU integration, was on track to win the most seats. However, as near-final results indicated, they will fall well short of the absolute majority required to command parliament.
The largest opposition group was expected to be a wide left-wing alliance, while the far-right won record-high victories and the conservatives were expected to become kingmakers.
Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire termed the verdict as a “democratic shock” and warned that if other blocs did not cooperate,
This would block our capacity to reform and protect the French.
A hung parliament will necessitate a level of power-sharing and agreement among parties not seen in previous decades in France. In France, there is no predetermined timeline for how events will evolve. In 1988, a freshly elected president was the last to lose an overall majority in legislative elections.
Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne stated,
The result is a risk for our country in view of the challenges we have to face.
The Prime Minister added that Macron’s camp will begin seeking coalitions on Monday.
If the legislature remains impasse, Macron may be forced to call a quick election.
