Indonesia, including the famed island of Bali, will be the next holiday destination to jump on the digital nomad bandwagon, with proposals for a visa that would allow remote workers to live there tax-free.
Sandiaga Uno, Indonesia’s tourism minister, unveiled the proposed five-year “digital nomad visa” this week.
Mr. Uno stated that the nation hopes to welcome 3.6 million overseas visitors back to the archipelago in the next year, thanks to a new remote working visa and a greater emphasis on spiritual retreats and eco-tourism.
Mr. Uno told the South China Morning Post that
In the past, the ‘three Ss’ were sun, sea and sand. We’re moving it to serenity, spirituality and sustainability. This way we’re getting better quality and better impact on the local economy.
According to the minister, the five-year remote working visa would allow freelancers to live on islands like Bali tax-free if their profits came from firms outside of Indonesia.
There were prior proposals for a digital nomad visa in 2021, but they were scrapped because to the popularity of Covid-19 on the islands.
Current temporary visas for remote workers visiting Indonesia include the Free Visa, Visa on Arrival (VoA), and the Social, Tourist, or Cultural Visa, however they are only valid for 30 to 180 days. For longer-term working visits, a five-year visa would be a more defined framework.
Indonesia has maintained severe travel restrictions until March 7, when tourist permits were reinstated. Double-vaccinated visitors can now visit the islands without the requirement for testing or quarantine, while travel insurance with Covid-19 coverage is required.
Tourist arrivals in the nation reached 111,000 in April, representing 500% of March’s tourism levels and the biggest monthly visitor total since before the epidemic.
