India and Pakistan handed over the list of prisoners-fishermen to each other

India and Pakistan at the same time changed the list of civilian prisoners and fishermen in their custody through diplomats in the Delhi and Islamabad. The Ministry of External Affairs gave this information on Friday. In fact, such lists are exchanged through diplomatic channels on 1 January and 1 July every year in accordance with the provisions of the Consular Access Agreement signed in May 2008.

India handed over a list of 309 Pakistani civilian prisoners and 95 fishermen in the custody of Pakistan. Similarly, Pakistan has shared a list of 49 civilian prisoners and 633 fishermen in its custody. The Ministry of External Affairs has demanded the early return of civilian prisoners along with their boats to Indian defence personnel and fishermen missing from Pakistani custody.

In this case, Pakistan has been asked to release 536 Indian fishermen and 03 Indian civilian prisoners at the earliest, who have completed their sentences and whose nationality has been confirmed. In addition, Pakistan has been asked to provide immediate consular access to the remaining 105 fishermen and 20 civilian prisoners, who are in Pakistani custody and believed to be Indians.

India is committed to addressing on a priority basis all humanitarian matters, including those relating to prisoners and fishermen in every other country. Meanwhile, India has jointly urged Pakistan to expedite necessary action to certify the status of 57 Pakistani prisoners, including fishermen, whose return is an incomplete confirmation of the situation by Pakistan.
