According to a Sotheby’s announcement on Tuesday, a fossilised skeleton of a T. rex relative that walked the world some 76 million years ago will be auctioned off in New York this month.
On July 28, the Gorgosaurus skeleton will be the centrepiece of Sotheby’s natural history auction, according to the auction company.
In the late Cretaceous Period, an apex carnivore named Gorgosaurus thrived in what is now western Canada and the United States. It was 10 million years older than the Tyrannosaurus rex, its close relative.
According to Sotheby’s, the specimen being sold was uncovered in 2018 in the Judith River Formation close to Havre, Montana. It is approximately 22 feet (6.7 metres) long and roughly 10 feet (3 metres) tall.
According to the auction company, this is the sole specimen of the Gorgosaurus skeleton that is available for private ownership because all of the other ones are in museum collections.
Sotheby’s global head of science and popular culture Cassandra Hatton stated, “In my career, I have had the honour of handling and selling many outstanding and unique things, but few have the power to inspire amazement and grab imaginations quite like this incredible Gorgosaurus skeleton.“
The fossil is valued between $5 million and $8 million in Sotheby’s presale estimate.
