Nigerian Air Force Mistakenly Bombs Civilians

A military plane from Nigeria allegedly fired a missile into a hamlet in the state of Katsina in the northwest of the country when it was intended to be targeting armed gangs, according to reports.

According to local MP Abduljalal Haruna Runka, at least one person was murdered and more than a dozen others are receiving medical attention at a hospital.

The announcement comes a day after gunmen ambushed President Muhammadu Buhari’s advance security team as they prepared to fly to the state to celebrate Eid this weekend.

The purported attack on civilians has not yet been addressed by the Nigerian military.

However, in a previous statement, it claimed that two camps where people it referred to as “terrorists” were sheltering near several nearby villages had been struck by its aircraft.

As part of operations targeting members of armed organisations who frequently shelter in civilian areas, Nigerian military planes have attacked civilians on many occasions in recent years.

In Kurebe, Shiroro Local Government of Niger State, an explosion from a fighter plane operated by the Nigerian Air Force claimed the lives of no less than six children in April.

The event occurred on April 13 as the kids returned to the Kurebe community’s motorised borehole to retrieve water.

The most notorious occurred when, in 2017, a camp for displaced persons close to the Cameroonian border saw the deaths of over 100 civilians and relief personnel.
