Former Japan PM Shinzo Abe Shot: In ‘Critical Condition’

Former Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, has been shot during a campaign event on Friday. Abe, 67, was giving out a campaign speech at Nara in western Japan for the upcoming parliamentary election. The suspect, a 41-year-old man with a homemade firearm, has been arrested.

Abe was airlifted to a hospital while going under cardiac arrest. It is reported that he was shot in the neck as well as on the left side of his chest. Local media reported that the suspect was ‘dissatisfied and wanted to kill Abe’. The man was identified to be Tetsuya Yamagami, who served in the Japanese Maritime self-defence force for 3 years.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said that Shinzo Abe is in a ‘critical condition’.

It is barbaric and malicious and it cannot be tolerated. We will do everything we can … At this moment, doctors are working very hard to save Abe.
