Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pronounced dead after being shot by a shooter at a political rally. The suspect lives in Nara.
According to local media, the assailant was “discontent” with Abe and desired to have him killed. With a handmade gun, the 41-year-old, a former soldier in the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force, started shooting at Abe.
Two bullets were fired as Abe was delivering a campaign address in the western city of Nara.
The shooting, which may have included Japan’s most well-known lawmaker, is a shocking event in a nation with a reputation for having low rates of violent crime and strict firearms rules. Prior to Sunday’s upper house elections, Abe was giving a stump speech when, what appeared to be gunshots were heard.
According to the eyewitness, the accused arrived from behind at the time when the former PM was delivering the stump speech. “The first shot sounded like a toy. He didn’t fall and there was a large bang. The second shot was more visible, you could see the spark and smoke”, the eyewitness was quoted.
