Following months of protests and the resignation of Gotabaya Rajapaksa as president, acting president Ranil Wickremesinghe ordered a state of emergency on Sunday to avoid protests and carry out the Presidential voting this week.
Justifying his decision, the acting president elaborated in the notification that:
“It is expedient, so to do, in the interests of public security, the protection of public order and the maintenance of supplies and services essential to the life of the community.”

The Presidential election in the parliament is set to take place on Wednesday. Wickremesinghe is considered the favourite to take over the post. Although, some of the earlier protests were aimed at Wickremesinghe as well, an ally of Rajapaksa.
