WHO declares Monkeypox a ‘Public Health Emergency’.

The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Doctor Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, declared Monkeypox a global health emergency on Saturday. More specifically, WHO called it a ‘public health emergency of international concern’ to bring alertness to countries. It is the highest alert that the WHO can declare within its powers.

So far, 75 countries reported the presence of Monkeypox. Around 16,000 cases and 5 deaths have been tallied due to the virus. An emergency committee, which classifies any virus or outbreak could not come to a conclusion about whether Monkeypox is a global emergency. Dr Tedros said that declaring it as one will help speed up the development of vaccines and other medications to regulate its spread.

“This is an outbreak that can be stopped with the right strategies in the right groups.”
