According to Reports, For the first time in more than 20 years, lawmakers passed a bill to restrict assault-style weapons on July 29 in the US House of Representatives.
The law was passed 217-213, primarily along partisan lines, with two Republican voted in supporting the bill and five Democrats voting against it, as per Hill.
According to the details, Texas Democrats Vicente Gonzalez, Henry Cuellar, Jared Golden, Ron Kind, and Kurt Schrader all voted against the prohibition. Republicans Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and Chris Jacobs of New York both backed the bill.
‘Assault weapon bill’ :
The assault weapons ban bill did receive bipartisan support in the House, despite widespread Republican opposition in the Senate. In view of the recent horrific shootings involving these weapons, the majority of Democrats in the House declared that it was imperative to outlaw them.
Hill stated that, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stated earlier on Friday that the House would take up the bill that afternoon and postpone discussion of it until next month.
“Today, the Democratic Majority will take up and adopt the Assault Weapons Ban legislation: a vital step in our sustained fight against the horrific pandemic of gun violence in our country”, Pelosi had said that to her party members prior to the vote.
Fears about the police measures lack of responsibility were voiced by several liberals. According to the Democrats’ initial proposal, the assault weapons ban and public safety precautions would be introduced together.
‘Number of democrats voted in favour of the bill’ :
The bill, sponsored by 207 Democrats who took part in the voting and were led by Representative David Cicilline, calls for the importation, sale, manufacture, or transfer of a variety of semiautomatic shotguns, pistols, and assault rifles based on those weapons’ characteristics.
With the passing of this bill, Congress has for the first time in more than three decades embraced significant gun violence prevention legislation. The House decided to pass this law in response to a string of terrible incidents that occurred all around the country.
President Joe Biden of the United States signed a bipartisan assault weapon ban bill into law in June after it passed both the House and the Senate.
Concerned about the spike in gun violence in the US, Biden proposed either banning assault weapons to safeguard children and families or raising the legal buying age from 18 to 21. In the US in 2022, there were 302 mass shootings, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
