Beijing said on Friday that engagement between India and China to resolve the eastern Ladakh border standoff is effective and agreed with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar that an Asian Century cannot occur if the two nations do not work together.
PANGONG-SO LAKE DISPUTE:
Jaishankar said the relationship between India and China was going through a “extremely difficult phase” as a result of what Beijing had done at the border and emphasised that the Asian Century would not occur if the two neighbours could not work together after delivering a lecture on “India’s Vision of the Indo-Pacific” at the prestigious Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok on Thursday.
In eastern Ladakh, Chinese and Indian forces are locked in a protracted confrontation. 16 rounds of Corps Commander Level negotiations between the two parties have already taken place in an effort to end the impasse that began on May 5, 2020, following a violent altercation in the Pangong Lake regions.
CHINA BACKING INDIA:
When asked about Jaishankar’s remarks, Wang Wenbin, a spokeswoman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, stated that a Chinese leader once said that an Asian Century cannot occur if China and India cannot achieve sound growth.
“Only when China, India, and other nations are able to experience sound development will there be a true Asia Pacific Century or Asian Century. He pointed out that China and India are two large neighbours, two developing economies, and two ancient civilisations.“
According to Wang, China and India have far more interests in common than differences, and the two neighbours have the knowledge and capability to strengthen rather than threaten one another.
