Tuesday saw a regular transit of the Taiwan Strait by a Canadian frigate and a vessel of the United States Navy, according to the American military.
Warships from the United States, as well as occasionally those from allies like Britain and Canada, have frequently navigated the strait in recent years, angering China, which claims Taiwan despite the objections of the island’s democratically elected government.
The Arleigh Burke class guided-missile destroyer Higgins of the U.S. Navy and the Halifax-class frigate Vancouver of the Royal Canadian Navy carried out the transit across a section of the strait outside of any coastal state’s territorial sea, according to a statement from the U.S. Navy.
The Navy statement continued, “Cooperation like this reflects the core of our strategy to a secure and prosperous area.”
Early in August, U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan, angering China, which claims the island as its own.
China then started conducting ongoing military exercises close to the island.
Since the defeated Republic of China government retreated to Taiwan in 1949 after losing a civil war with the communists, who founded the People’s Republic of China, the narrow Taiwan Strait has frequently been the cause of military conflict.
