New Zealand is ‘likely’ to demand a negative Covid test for Chinese visitors

According to a report by, Radio New Zealand (RNZ):

Travelers from China will very certainly face stricter conditions to enter New Zealand as Covid-19 levels rise, according to epidemiologist Michael Baker.

China’s departure last month from the “zero-Covid” policy it had followed for almost three years resulted in unchecked infections sweeping across the country, with experts pointing to inconsistencies between official case and death counts and what was happening on the ground.

The Chinese government has denied allegations that it purposefully underreported the total number of casualties.

A public health risk assessment report arriving today in New Zealand will assist officials decide if a negative Covid-19 test result is required before leaving.

Baker predicted that the government would follow Australia’s approach and require people arriving from China to show they were Covid-negative.

He said that several nations, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada, have lately implemented pre-departure testing for Chinese travellers.

He did, however, advise that any policy adjustments for persons travelling from countries with high Covid-19 instances should be stated cautiously.

He stated that rule adjustments should apply to any nation where case numbers were increasing or where there was insufficient information to determine the situation and the proportion of the population infected with Covid-19.

Yesterday, Stuart Nash, the New Zealand government’s responsibility minister, stated that New Zealand’s reaction will be appropriate to the possible hazards posed by arriving travellers “and in the light of the worldwide situation.”

Beijing recently declared that quarantine regulations for inbound travellers arriving in China early this month will be lifted, as well as a reduction in wider control efforts to halt the illness, reversing its stringent zero-Covid stance.

On Friday, the Globe Health Organization reiterated its appeal for China to disclose specific statistics regarding its Covid-19 problem with the rest of the world.

Health officials want exact and real-time numbers, information on hospitalisations, fatalities, and immunisations, as well as additional information on genetic sequencing findings.
