The third time that Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has served as president of Brazil, he has taken the oath of office.
The well-known left-wing politician Lula, who served as president from 2003 and 2010, also defeated Jair Bolsonaro in the election of October.
Lula promised to reconstruct a nation that was in “awful ruins” in his inaugural speech.
He criticised his predecessor’s policies, who left for the US on Friday to skip the handover ceremony.
Since early in the morning, a sea of Lula fans had assembled in front of Congress, dressed in the red of his Workers’ Party.
They travelled for both a celebration and to witness their leader being sworn in.
“I promise to maintain, defend and fulfill the constitution, observe the laws, promote the general good of the Brazilian people, support the unity, integrity and independence of Brazil,” Lula said.
The 76-year-old politician, returning to the presidency after a 12 year hiatus, arrived with his wife, Rosângela da Silva, at the Metropolitan Cathedral in Brasília at 12:20 p.m. local time before heading to congress where a formal congressional session took place.
Parliamentarians applauded Lula before breaking into a chant of “ole, ole ola, Lula, Lula.”
A policy reversal on deforestation
Lula sought to maximise the potential of the nation while praising Brazil’s natural resources and promising to reverse his predecessor’s policy of deforestation in the Amazon.
Brazil has the prerequisites to emerge as a global environmental power that no other nation does.
As a starting point for the energy and ecological transition toward sustainable agriculture and mining operations, family agriculture, and green industry, we will use creativity, the bio-economy, and socio-biodiversity enterprises.
Zero greenhouse gas emissions and zero Amazonian deforestation are our objectives, Lula stated in his speech to Congress.
