According to information, following the far right former president Jair Bolsonaro’s supporters invasion of Brazil’s Congress, presidential residence, and Supreme Court, US President Joe Biden called the situation there in Brazil as “outrageous”.
Leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who last year defeated Bolsonaro in the most acrimonious election in a generation, announced a federal security intervention in Brasilia lasting until January 31 after the capital security forces were first outnumbered by the invaders.
US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated that the country opposes any effort to weaken Brazil’s democracy. “We will keep supporting Brazil’s democratic institutions, and President Biden is continuously keeping an eye on the situation”. Sullivan stated that, Brazil’s democracy will not be impacted by violence.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken echoed Lula’s call for a quick end to the attacks. The violence brought to mind the assault on the US Capitol by admirers of the former President Donald Trump two years previously.
US Senator Bob Menendez, chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee further told that, “I condemn this awful attack on Brazil’s government buildings induced by demagogue Bolsonaro’s reckless disrespect for democratic norms. Two years have gone since January 6 and Trump’s influence still tarnishes our globe. It is imperative to protect democracy and hold evildoers accountable”.
