Daniil Medvedev, former number one seeded player and a two time losing finalist was shocked by Sebastian Korda at the Australian Open 2023, adding the Russian to a growing list of top seeded who lost early.
The son of the 1998 Australian Open champion Petr Korda, the 31st ranked American Sebastian Korda defeated the seventh seed in striaht sets by 7-6 (9/7), 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) on Rod Laver Arena to advance quickly to the round of 16.
Daniil Medvedev was hoping to join Djokovic, Mats Wilander, and Ivan Lendl as the only other men to make three straight Melbourne Park finals during the Open era of the Australian Open. But that journey is gone today, as he joined Nadal, the defending champion, Casper Ruud, and eight seeded Taylor Fritz as well known first week eliminators at the ongoing Australian Open 2023.
Sebastian Korda’s surprise victory will set up a matchup with Hubert Hurkacz, the 10th seeded player from Poland, for a spot in the quarterfinals. On the other hand, Hubert Hurkacz overcame Denis Shapovalov of Canada in a 5 set thriller of a contest by 7-6 (7/3), 6-4, 1-6, 4-6, 6-3 and advances to the last 16.
