A South Korean volunteer fighter who was injured in Ukraine, facing a criminal investigation after returning home

On Friday, a South Korean volunteer fighter came home from Ukraine, claiming that he required time to recover from his injuries and he was willing to face a police inquiry for allegedly breaking the law by travelling to Ukraine despite a government ban.

As he walked off the plane, he said nearly ten police officers approached him and advised him to quarantine for a week as a COVID-19 precaution before being summoned for questioning.

Volunteers from all over the world have gone to Ukraine to assist in the fight against Russian military who invaded the country on February 24. Russia’s intervention in Ukraine is referred to as a “special operation.”

In mid-March, shortly after he travelled to Ukraine, the South Korean foreign ministry filed a police complaint against him, accusing him of breaking a passport act.

In February, South Korea imposed a travel ban on its citizens visiting Ukraine due to security concerns. Those who disobey a prohibition might face a year in prison or a fine of up to ten million won ($8,000).
