According to a new study, there are over 500 “lost” animal species that haven’t been observed in more than 50 years but aren’t officially labelled extinct.
The study, which was published in the journal Animal Conservation, is the first global assessment of all missing but not extinct terrestrial vertebrate species, identifying 562 of them.
An multinational team of scientists examined data from the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species on 32,802 species (IUCN Red List)
Researchers believe that these discoveries may aid future searches for the extinct species.
