Andy Murray Retaliates To Clinch Wimbledon Opener

For Andy Murray, the Wimbledon competition is not always smooth. Andy Murray defeated James Duckworth and advanced to the Wimbledon second round after dropping the first set.

Murray, who was playing on Centre Court for the first time since suffering an abdominal injury in the Stuttgart Open final earlier this month, won the match 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-4 in two hours and 43 minutes.

John Isner, a former semifinalist who beat French qualifier Enzo Couacaud in five sets, will be Murray’s next opponent. Murray has never lost before the third round at Wimbledon.

Physically, Murray insisted he was “fine” and showed no symptoms of discomfort from the injury that has prevented him from competing for the last two weeks.

Murray only made 46% of his first serves in the first set, but he swiftly improved with back-to-back love holds. The two-time champion also enhanced the rhythm of his groundstrokes, ultimately exhausting Duckworth to take the lead 4-2.

Murray was able to tie the score after the interval.

Murray improved in the third set, earning a point after an electrifying underarm serve and earning an early break after an outstanding drop shot.

Duckworth requested that Centre Court’s roof be shut down as the light was fading and more errors were starting to come from his racket. But only after losing the third set did he finally realise his ambition.

The fourth set was evenly matched up until Murray went ahead and broke in the ninth game when his rival made a double fault.

Duckworth disputed a line call that was later determined to be correct, but Murray had no trouble completing the task and winning the match.

In his on-court interview, Murray stated,

It’s amazing to be back out here with a full crowd.

I am getting on a bit now so I don’t know how many more opportunities I will get to play on this court so I want to make the most of every time. Glad I managed to get through and hopefully get another match on here in a couple of days.

I did well to rebound after the first set, he likes playing on grass, he was playing very well, once I started playing my returns a bit more as the match went on I felt a bit more comfortable and did well to get through it.
