A strange-looking dead sea creature that was decaying was discovered on a US shore. A fish with needle-like fangs is seen laying dead on a heap of gravel in the images shared on Reddit by user Kristine Tillotson. It looks to be rotting, with parts of its flesh stripping away. Ms. Tillotson stated that she found the animal near Mill Beach in Brookings, Oregon and requested for assistance in identifying it in the description.
A social media post has went viral since it was shared. On the images, a number of individuals left speculative comments in an attempt to identify it. “I think that is called Aaaaagh!!” one person said. It was suggested by another user that it may be a wolf eel, a variety that is found across the North Pacific.
“ The teeth are not big enough for a wolf eel and lingcod are known for replacing teeth daily which is why you can see the rows of new teeth with being shrunken.” pointed out a third user.
According to Newsweek, Ms. Tillotson has disclosed that both a Reddit marine scientist group and a bone collection organization have determined that the bizarre creature is a kind of eel known as a monkeyface prickleback eel. “I was excited and confused when I first saw it. I love walking the beach to see what washes up whether it’s animals or shells. I thought it was super interesting because it didn’t look like any fish I’d ever seen, it looked like one of those deep-sea creatures,” she concluded.
According to the publication, North America’s Pacific coast is home to monkeyface prickleback eels, also known as monkeyface eels. From Oregon to Baja California and Mexico, these can be encountered in rugged reef settings. Due to their peculiar appearance—live individuals have a big hump on top of their heads that might resemble a monkey’s nose—they are known as monkeyface eels.
