In an unprecedentedly harsh critique of Beijing’s policies and human rights record, G7 leaders urged China on Tuesday to use its clout with Russia to stop its invasion of Ukraine and cease “expansive maritime claims” in the South China Sea.
They cited a decision by the International Court of Justice ordering Moscow to halt its military action, as well as relevant U.N. General Assembly resolutions, in calling on China to pressure Russia to withdraw forces from Ukraine promptly and unconditionally.
China has criticised the United States and its allies for arming Ukraine and claims that sanctions against Russia will not end the problem there.
“10% of the world’s population resides in G7 nations. They have no right to speak for the entire world or to believe that the entire world should adhere to their standards and beliefs “, Zhao Lijian, a spokeswoman for the Chinese foreign ministry, stated when questioned about the G7 communiqué during a news conference on Wednesday.
The Group of Seven rich industrial democracies attacked what they called coercive Chinese non-market measures that skewed the global economy in the communique that followed their three-day summit in the Bavarian Alps.
China’s “non-transparent and market-distorting initiatives” and other sorts of economic and industrial directions were mentioned in the communique’s Chinese section, which the United States highlighted.
The G7 leaders agreed to cooperate to create an environment where their companies and employees could compete fairly.
The communiqué also expressed grave concern over unilateral moves to change the status quo by using force or coercion in the East and South China seas.
It said: “We emphasise that China’s sweeping maritime claims in the South China Sea lack any validity in law.”
