According to reports, the Cyclone “Sitrang” avoided the West Bengal coast before making landfall in Bangladesh, Barisal on late Monday night, As stated by the Weather service on Tuesday. Five People were killed in that Cyclone hitting Bangladesh. It also said that, morning weather in parts of south Bengal is expected to get better.
The system, which proceeded towards Bangladesh from the north Bay of Bengal at a speed of 56 kmph, brought moderate to heavy rain and stormy weather to West Bengal’s coastal districts of South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, and East Midnapore. The holiday spirit of Kali Puja and Diwali was subdued by this.
According to the regional MeT centre here, Sitrang made landfall in Bangladesh between 9.30 and 11.30 p.m. on Monday between Tinkona Island and Sandwip, close to Barisal, with sustained winds of 80 to 90 kmph and gusts up to 100 kmph. By Tuesday evening, it is highly likely to weaken into a depression and ultimately a low pressure system.
The West Bengal coast will experience squally winds on Tuesday morning with speeds reaching 40 to 50 kmph with gusts to 60 kmph, which will gradually drop to 30 to 40 kmph with gusts to 50 kmph by afternoon. As cyclone “Sitrang” drifted north-northeastward and lay 260 kilometres southeast of Sagar island, the Met department issued an alert on forecast of heavy rain in coastal Bengal and north-eastern states that would mar the pleasant spirit of Diwali and Kali Puja.
People were forced to stay indoors on a joyful evening that would have ordinarily attracted tens of thousands of visitors to marquees housing idols of Goddess Kali and take in the city’s lovely lights due to sporadic rains that started in the morning. Kolkata’s streets appeared to be mostly empty.
