“Doing something better than Serena; it’s the best thing you can get in tennis” – Iga Swiatek on beating the Serena Williams’ record

Iga Swiatek’s domination continued at the 2022 French Open, when she won her second Grand Slam singles championship, defeating American teenager Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-3 in the final.

Iga Swiatek equaled Venus Williams’ record of 35 straight match wins in the twenty-first century, the longest on the WTA tour, with her victory at Roland Garros. She also broke Serena Williams’ record of winning 34 consecutive sets set in 2013.
The Pole expressed her joy at breaking Serena Williams’ victory streak in a recent interview with WTA Insider, saying she had always wanted to set a record for herself. Swiatek went on to say that beating Serena Williams’ record after so many years of domination was “the best feeling in the world.”

“It may seem pretty weird, but having that 35th win and kind of doing something more than Serena did, it’s something special. Because I always wanted to have some kind of a record. In tennis, it’s pretty hard after Serena’s career. Doing something better than Serena kind of, it’s the best thing you can get in tennis, basically, after what she’s done for so many years,” Swiatek said.

The 21-year-old had won five events and 28 matches in a row when he arrived at the Paris Major. She was under a lot of pressure from both herself and the tennis community to win her second Roland Garros title. Winning the Major for the second time was more important to the Pole than anything else.
