Earthquake Of 6.0 Magnitude Hits NEPAL

As per the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre, a 6.0-magnitude quake shook Nepal on Sunday morning. The earthquake occurred near Martim Birta of the Khotang district, 147 kilometres southeast of Kathmandu, at 8:13 a.m. IST.

It was discovered that the epicentre was 10 kilometres away in eastern Nepal, at longitude and latitude of 27.14 degrees North and 86.67 degrees East. No incidents of injuries or damage have been reported as of yet.

It is now vital to adopt well-thought-out policy measures to deal with such tragedies as a result of the recent earthquakes in Nepal, which have caused unprecedented loss of life and property destruction.

A strong earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck central Nepal on April 25, 2015, between Kathmandu, the nation’s capital, and Pokhara. Estimates place the death toll at 8,964 and the number of injured at close to 22,000.

Tremors were also detected in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Lahore, Pakistan, and Lhasa, Tibet, all of which were impacted by the Gorkha earthquake. The international airport in Kathmandu was forced to close due to the earthquake.

The earthquake on Mount Everest also triggered an avalanche that killed 22 people. A large aftershock with an epicentre near the Chinese border between Kathmandu and Mount Everest happened on May 12, 2015.

Estimates indicate that this earthquake caused more than 2,500 injuries and over 200 fatalities.

The most powerful earthquake to ever strike Nepal occurred in 1934. The 8.0 magnitude earthquake completely destroyed the towns of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Patan.

It has been found that the Indian plate is slipping 5 cm beneath the Eurasian plate every year. The Himalayan young fold mountains rise in height as a result, but the region also becomes more earthquake-prone. If proper planning is not made, calamities like earthquakes can inflict havoc.
