Ex-PM Abe’s state funeral to cost $1.83 million in Japan

Despite mounting criticism from a public incensed by discoveries of the ruling party’s ties to the Unification Church, the government of Japan has announced that $1.83 million will be spent on a state funeral for deceased former leader Shinzo Abe.

Although funeral services were held shortly following Abe’s shooting death at an election rally on July 8, Japan has chosen to hold a formal funeral at Tokyo’s Nippon Budokan arena on September 27. Abe was Japan’s longest-serving but contentious premier.

The cabinet of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, an ally of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, stated on Friday that the state funeral would only be covered by public monies.

Polls, however, consistently reveal that the concept is unpopular. A state funeral was opposed by 53% of respondents in the most recent survey, which was released on Sunday.

The public has been incensed by reports of connections between the ruling party and the Unification Church, which, according to the vast majority of survey participants, have not been adequately explained. This has caused Kishida a lot of trouble and has decreased support for him.

The church’s donation collection practises have come under scrutiny over the years. It was established in South Korea in the 1950s and is well-known for its large wedding ceremonies.
