Following its recognition of the Donetsk and Lugansk separatist republics, ‘Ukraine cuts all diplomatic ties with Syria’

Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, declared in a video uploaded on Telegram that “links between Ukraine and Syria will no longer exist.” Damascus was forewarned of sanctions by Zelensky. He predicted that the pressure from sanctions on Syria will be “much stronger.”
Earlier this month, the Russian team and officials of the Donetsk republic met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Assad consented to begin political ties with Donetsk during the meeting.

Significantly, Syria followed Russia as the second nation to recognise the independence of the two separatist regions of Ukraine. In February of this year, Moscow recognised the two republics as independent nations.

The Donbas region is the location of both of the breakaway nations. Since 2014, Russia has largely controlled the area. Syria had also recognised South Ossetia and Abkhazia in Georgia as separate republics earlier in 2018. Georgia is a former Soviet state, just as Ukraine. International recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as being a part of Georgia. However, they are recognised as sovereign states by Russia and several of its allies.

In the meantime, Russian forces have stepped up their assault on Severodonetsk’s twin city, Lysychansk. According to Sergiy Gaida, the regional governor of Lugansk, Russia strikes Lysychansk in eastern Ukraine very frequently. In order to control the entire Luhansk region, Russia will attempt to seize Lysychansk city.
