According to the head of the UN refugee agency (UNHCR), a food security crisis sparked by the Ukraine war would force more people to escape their homes in poorer nations, pushing global displacement levels to new highs.
According to a United Nations estimate released on Thursday, 89.3 million people were forcibly displaced globally by the end of 2021 as a result of persecution, conflict, abuse, and violence. Millions more have fled or been displaced within Ukraine since then, with price spikes due to halted grain exports certain to stoke further migration elsewhere.
 Filippo Grandi says,
“If you have a food crisis on top of everything I have described – war, human rights, climate it will just accelerate the trends I’ve described in this report. Clearly the impact if this is not resolved quickly will be pretty devastating.
As a result of price spikes and violent insurgencies in Africa’s Sahel area, more people are migrating, he further said.
According to the UNHCR study, the number of displaced people has risen every year over the past decade. It has now surpassed the 42.7 million persons who were displaced in 2012.
Grandi also criticized what he called Ukraine’s “monopoly” on funding, claiming that other programmed to assist displaced people were underfunded.
Grandi stated that the European Union’s approach to refugee issues has been “unequal.” He compared state quarrels over taking in small groups of migrants crossing the Mediterranean by boat to EU countries’ compassion to Ukrainian refugees since Russia’s incursion in February.
