Afghanistan and Iran have addressed their dispute over water sharing and reached an agreement on the Helmand water treaty, according to the ministry of energy and water official.
According to the Helmand Water Treaty signed between the two countries in 1973, the Helmand River’s water will be shared with Iran this year . A growing disagreement between Afghanistan and Iran over water rights and the construction of the Kamal Khan dam has centred mostly on the Helmand River.
According to the Iranian government, damming the Helmand will have a negative impact on the environment, especially in the water-scarce region of Iran’s border with Afghanistan. The Afghan government, on the other hand, asserted that the dams are being constructed in compliance with the 1973 water pact with Iran in order to preserve water security.
According to a representative of the Ministry of Energy and Water, “the two parties urged for the treaty’s execution as the issue was within the treaty’s scope.” In 1973, Kabul and Tehran came to an agreement to share 850 million cubic metres of water annually, or 26 cubic metres per second, from the Helmand River.
According to the source, the Ministry also plans to resume building the Kamal Khan dam in south-western Afghanistan to control the water flow of the Helmand River.
