Israeli Parliament dissolves, Elections scheduled for November

Israeli parliament known as ‘The Knesset’ voted to dissolve and collapse the government on Thursday. The turbulent democracy is heading for the fifth election in less than 4 years. It is scheduled to be held on the 1st of November.

Israel’s Foreign Minister Yair Lapid will serve as the interim Prime Minister during this period. Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett becomes the shortest-serving PM in Israeli history after losing a 92-0 vote on Thursday.

Bennett stated that he is not running for re-election but will continue to serve alongside Lapid.

“In the last few weeks, we did everything we could to save this government. In our eyes, the continuation of its existence was in the national interest.”

Although this provides an opportunity for former PM Benjamin Netanyahu to step back into the office, he is undergoing trial on corruption charges, which include bribery, and fraudulent activities while serving in the office.

The coalition government has been very volatile since Netanhayu’s stormy years as Prime Minister of Israel. While addressing the parliament before voting, Netanyahu said

“They promised change, they spoke about healing, they tried an experiment, and the experiment failed. We are the only alternative: a strong, stable, responsible nationalist government.”

Meanwhile, citizens of Israel have expressed distrust of the government. One biologist said that she ‘does not have the energy to vote again’.
