Italy Prime Minister Mario Draghi submitted his resignation to President Sergio Mattarella on Thursday. This is the second time Draghi has attempted to resign after Mattarella rejected it earlier this month. Italy’s coalition government imploded on Wednesday when 3 partners of Draghi failed to support him in a confidence vote, bringing political unrest to the country.
The president has asked Draghi to act as a ‘caretaker’ till the next step is taken. It is not clear whether Mattarella has accepted or will accept his resignation. Draghi is known for developing Italy from a financial standpoint and was a respected central banker. He is also one of the main architects of Europe’s reaction to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
