The 1000m is a unusual race which often involves both 1500m and 800m athletes. It is the perfect test for speed and endurance. The world champion over 1500m set a new PB in the race defeating many prominent 800m runners. He improved his Scottish Record from 2:16.27 to 2:13.88. he now holds the 3rd all time UK record in 1000m and no. 9 on the all time list.
Other notable athletes who competed in the race were Marco Arop, 800m bronze medalist in Oregon22, Clayton Murphy 2016 Olympics 800m bronze medalist, Wykliffe Kinyamal Commonwealth Games 800m winner and Emmanuel Korir reigning World and Olympic champion.
Canadian Macro Arop finished behind Whightman setting a new Canadian record and Clayton murphy finished third. The race ended in disappointment for Emmanuel Korir who finished in 12th place.
