‘Rishi Sunak’ and ‘Liz Truss’ to compete in the finals of the race to UK’s next PM

In the UK Conservative Party leadership race, Rishi Sunak has advanced to the final round and will compete against Liz Truss for the position of prime minister to follow Boris Johnson.
Sunak received 137 votes in the fifth round of voting, which featured three competitors. Liz Truss received 113 votes, coming in second.

The candidate who earned the fewest votes in the election on Wednesday, Penny Mordaunt, was eliminated. Sunak keeps up his remarkable performance, winning by a respectable margin in each round of voting thus far.

For the next few weeks, Sunak and Truss will canvass for the votes of the nation’s 1,80,000 conservative party members who will cast ballots online or by mail. On September 5, the results of the party leadership election will be announced, and the victor will automatically become UK Prime Minister.

Sunak will take credit for guiding Britain’s economy through the Covid 19 catastrophe, but in order to prevail in the contest to become the next Prime Minister, he must dispel claims that he is too wealthy and eager to raise taxes.

Most conservatives are sympathetic to his long-standing pro-Brexit beliefs, but some believe he was intentionally responsible for the events that resulted in Boris Johnson’s resignation as prime minister.
According to Sunak, he is the only one with the expertise to steer Britain through an impending recession or slowdown in the economy. Sunak has called opponents in the conservative leadership race’s promises of rapid tax cuts “fairy dreams,” but he asserts that they will be feasible once Britain has curbed  inflation, which is predicted to reach double digits soon.
