Russian cosmonauts rejoice from space on taking control of the Luhansk region of Ukraine

On Monday, Russian cosmonauts on board the International Space Station celebrated Moscow’s victory in the war with the conquest of the Luhansk region in eastern Ukraine.

The Luhansk region was taken over by Moscow, according to the Russian space agency Roscosmos, and it was “a freedom day to rejoice both on Earth and in space.” The cosmonauts Oleg Artemyev, Denis Matveev, and Sergei Korsakov appeared in photos smiling while waving the flags of the self-declared Luhansk People’s Republic and Donetsk People’s Republic, two of Russia’s proxies in eastern Ukraine.

Residents of the Luhansk region’s occupied districts have been anticipating this day for eight years, according to a post by Roscosmos on the messaging service Telegram. We are confident that July 3, 2022, will go down in history as a significant date for the (Luhansk People’s) Republic.

After taking Lysychansk, the region’s final significant city, Russia and separatist troops said on Sunday that they had fully taken control of the Luhansk region.

Kyiv declared that its forces will reassemble and use long-range Western weapons to conduct a counteroffensive. Russia has concentrated on driving Ukrainian forces out of the eastern Luhansk and Donetsk regions where Moscow-backed separatists have been fighting Kyiv since Russia’s first military intervention in Ukraine in 2014.
