Sri Lanka Crisis: Gotabaya Rajapaksa officially resigns as President

After months of protests and unrest in Sri Lanka, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa officially resigned through email on Thursday. His resignation also marks the end of the Rajapaksa family in the Sri Lankan parliament, who presided over the country for more than 20 years. The speaker of the parliament, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena accepted his resignation on Friday.

The process of electing a new leader has started, and the speaker called on the parliament to gather on Saturday. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has been appointed as the acting president till the official president has been chosen. Although, Wickremesinghe is a favourite to take on the role.

Protesters welcomed the resignation and celebrated on the streets of Colombo. However, the soaring prices of everyday goods continue to bring hardships to the people. A spokesperson for the protestors said

“We are peacefully withdrawing from the presidential palace, the presidential secretariat and the prime minister’s office with immediate effect, but will continue our struggle”
