Sri Lanka Protests: President flees; whereabouts unknown

Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the president of Sri Lanka fled the country and his whereabouts are not known yet. This is in response to one of the largest protests so far since Sri Lanka’s economic crisis began. Thousands of protesters infiltrated the President’s residence in Colombo, the capital, on Saturday. Images of protesters in the office, the swimming pool and other rooms of the house have emerged on social media.

Sri Lanka has been facing an economic crisis for months and the citizens demand the resignation of the president, who hails from a long-standing Rajapaksa family that has had political control over Sri Lanka for decades. They blame him for bringing about the current crisis that is predicted to bring food shortages and a lack of other essential items to more than 25% of the population by 2023. The family has been accused of participating in malpractices like corruption.

In response to the unrest, the government imposed a night curfew and stopped all trains to Colombo.
