Stefanos Tsitsipas, the third seeded, maintained his perfect record for the year on Friday with a victory at the ongoing Australian Open 2023, setting up a matchup with powerful Italian Jannik Sinner in the round of 16.
The 24 years old, who hasn’t dropped a set in this Australian Open, defeated Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor on Rod Laver Arena by 6-2, 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 to advance into to the fourth round and secure his seventh straight victory of 2023. Stefanos Tsitsipas, having won his all four games at the United Cup before the Grand Slam.
Further, it is the highest seed remaining on the men’s side because as Casper Ruud, the third ranked player in the world, and defending champion Rafael Nadal are both out. His next challenge, which will determine whether he advances to the final eight, is a matchup with Italy’s 15th seeded Sinner, who came from behind to defeat Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics by 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0.
This is a repeat of their quarterfinal match at Melbourne Park from a year ago, where Tsitsipas won in straight sets. Similar to Tsitsipas, 63rd ranked Griekspoor entered the match unbeaten, riding a six match winning streak after winning his first Tour level championship in Pune, India. But the advancing Greek, a three time Melbourne Park semifinalist who is seeking for his first Grand Slam trophy. But, in the end, it was no match for him.
