Japanese officials reported early on Sunday that North Korea appeared to have launched a ballistic missile, and national broadcaster NHK suggested that perhaps two missiles were launched.
The launch would be North Korea’s sixth since September 25, raising concerns in Tokyo and Washington.
The rocket had already fallen, according to a statement from the Japanese coast guard. It looked to have landed outside of Japan’s exclusive economic zone, according to public broadcaster NHK.
Later, according to sources from the defence ministry cited by NHK, a second missile appeared to have been fired, though no other details were known at the time.
According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, North Korea launched an unidentified ballistic missile toward the east coast, according to Yonhap News Agency.
