Nick Kyrgios of Australia was defeated by Karen Khachanov of Russia at the US Open 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 6-7 (3/7), 6-4 to reach his first Grand Slam quarterfinal. Khachanov, ranked 27, defeated Wimbledon runner-up Kyrgios with 30 aces and a total of 63 winners in a battle of enormous serves.
The 26-year-old will face off against fifth-seeded Casper Ruud of Norway for a place in the championship match on sunday. I did it, you guys. Khachanov addressed the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd, which was heavily in favour of Kyrgios, saying, “At last, you are showing me some love”.
Despite all the antics on the other end, including Kyrgios’ constant accusations of his team for failing to support him adequately, Khachanov showed amazing maturity to withstand the Kyrgios storm, keeping his game flowing without losing rhythm.
Karen Khachanov took advantage of the fact that Kyrgios is so reliant on his serve by making the most of his own, only drop twice throughout the rest of the match. The forehand was being fired, and he had been precisely measured from the baseline. The former Masters 1000 champion showed signs of his past promise as he advanced to his maiden Grand Slam semifinal.
