US refuses to recognize Taiwan’s independence

According to the latest White House national security report released Wednesday, the US has reiterated that it does not recognise Taiwan’s independence and remains committed to the one-China policy, two months after relations between Beijing and Washington were strained again following visits by US political representatives to the island.

“We oppose any unilateral change to the ‘status quo’ on either side and do not support Taiwan independence. We remain committed to our one China policy,” Washington stated in a report that it is interested in maintaining its diplomatic relations with Taiwan.

“We will maintain our commitments under the Taiwan Relations Act to support its self-defense and our ability to resist any use of force or coercion against Taiwan,”

The animosity between China and the United States has reached unprecedented heights in recent months, with the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, set to visit the island, which Beijing believes to be part of its territory, in early August.

China responded to Pelosi’s visit by halting discussions with the US and conducting a series of military drills along the strait dividing the two regions. At least 150 US legislators have flown to Taiwan on official business in the recent decade, including 34 during Joe Biden’s presidency. Such interactions are viewed with distrust in Beijing, which sees them as a challenge to its sovereignty as well as a breach of the 1979 One China law.
