US welcomes Lithuania sanctions on Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave

After Lithuania imposed sanctions on Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave, the US has now supported it. “We stand with our NATO allies and we stand with Lithuania, the US welcomes the “unprecedented economic measures” taken by Lithuania and other countries against Russia for the invasion of Ukraine, State Department spokesman Ned Price, AFP reports.

Meanwhile, Russia warned the former member of the Soviet Union of dire consequences if it banned rail traffic in the Kaliningrad exclave. However, Lithuania has made it clear that it only adheres to EU-wide sanctions on Moscow.

Russia has said that Russia has every right to defend its national interests if the movement of goods to Kaliningrad is not fully resumed. Russia provoked this move of Lithuania and declared hostile. The Russian President’s Office has called this decision of Lithuania a violation of everything. Russia called the move illegal under international law and summoned the Lithuanian ambassador.

What happened between Lithuania and Russia?

The Russian city of Kaliningrad, located between the European Union and NATO countries, orders goods via rail. Kaliningrad’s gas supply is also through Lithuania. Lithuania said last week that it was banning goods on the Russian sanctions list from being sent to Kaliningrad by rail. Due to this, Russia was furious on Lithuania.
